Isn't Peter's power that he can just absorb anyone's power by being in the same vicinity? In "I am become death" why did Sylar have to "give" him his power?
need some clarification

Well, if you heard their conversation, Sylar can clearly somehow block his absorption.
"I can't give you my power"
The only other thing I can think of (which acctually sounds more likely) is that Pete DID absorb his power... he just did not know how to use it, and needed Sylar to explain.

I agree. When Peter told Sylar that he would just take his ability Sylar responded with "as if you could" and was somehow blocking Peter. Then he needed to "show" Peter how to use it and understand it. If I'm not mistaken, in Season 1 The Company couldn't figure it out either and Chandra couldn't identify it. Sylar is very complicated and very powerful.

You know its really interesting that you mentioned this. Since we have gone now through 3 seasons and with the amount of times that we have seen Sylar doing his dirty ways mentally all we see is that his power is telekinesis when reality is that his original power is "Understanding how things work". I think when he meant that he is blocking it is that I beleive that at that point Sylar had killed the haitian and taken his power. What kind of boggles my mind is that Peter and Sylar have had many encounters together and up to now Peter has only absorbed his telekinesis how come her never absorbed his original ability.
Now that Peter has the ability he can understand the "Variables" on the formula that was stolen.
At this point since Peter has lost his powers we will have to see how things play out.

The Haitian was still alive in the future (working with Clair and the others) so no, Sylar didn't kill him and take his power. If you think back all the way to the start, Peter has never really understood how the powers he absorbs work so he's never used all the ones he's absorbed. All Sylar does is teach Peter what he needs to know to be able to use this "knowing how things work" power. This is why Peter has never been a match for Sylar until this point, and why Sylar was able to provoke Peter into blowing up in season 1, etc...

Your Right Guy...Forgot Haitian was there..My mistake. Could it be then maybe Peter absorbs what ever is on the surface of that individual. For instance Peter can absorb the abilities of everbody else because they all have just one power which is on there surface, but since Sylar has multiple abilities and everytime they have met Sylar has only been doing Telekinesis thats what Peter has absorbed. Which makes me believe that Sylar didn't want to bring his original power out to the surface for Peter to take and when he did thats when he said "You have it now".

I think there is an element of having to know what you've got to be able to use it. Think of all the powers Peter had, but didn't know he had them and therefore didn't use them, when he was being "trained" by Claude in S1. Telekinesis is probably the best example.Claude used a broomstick to lay a beating on Peter before he instinctively stopped the broomstick with his mind. Peter didn't know he could do that when he did; it was more reflex. Peter could have had tea with Sylar at the end of S1, but not knowing that Sylar could melt things with his bare hands, has super-hearing, is nuclear, is telekenetic, super strong and fast, can turn things to ice, etc., Peter wouldn't think to try those things.
What I don't really get about Peter having to go into the future to learn from Sylar is why? What is so different about the way Sylar acquires powers? Peter was doing just fine without the hunger, unless he needs the hunger to throw a little aggression into the mix.

Peter needed to visit Future Sylar because he didn't know how to access his original ability of Intuitve Aptitude. None of the abilities Peter had acquired would help him understand the flaws in the formula. But Sylar's original ability, which he didn't know how to access, is what he needed to "understand how the formula works". Sylar's ability doesn't just let him absorb the abilities of others, but he has a sort of enhanced, genius understanding of how the ability works as well. Since Peter mimicks the abilities of others, he couldn't see Sylar's original ability, so he needed Sylar to show him. The "hunger" is a side effect of the ability, not the ability itself.

sylar had this intuitive power, peter the sponge power. peter absorbs all powers he comes in contact with, not fully knowing the extent to that power or how it really works. sylar knows how the powers he acquires work as he study's them from the brain of the victim. my point is peter already had sylars power, and all sylars other powers from their first encounter, but peter needed instruction on how to work sylars power. he got that, and suddenly he's knocking on the right door, his fathers! he then loses his powers. (i'm gutted for him). this leads me onto a few points. future peter got blasted in the chest and died. had future peter had his powers taken already by his dad? would that mean then that future peter meant something different when he said understanding sylars power would save the world? can his dad take a power like sylars, which is an understanding more than a power? would this help to regain more powers for peter or help destroy his father? and what about peters irish girlfriend? how is she going to play out? will she play a role in peters re-development? and my last point is the relationship between hiro and peter. hiro is always around when peter is at a climax to a saving the world mission. season one, hiro stabs sylar after peter kicks his ass, then in season two hiro tries to stop peter being a gormless prat with adam and the virus. now hiro is trying to get the weaknesses of peters father and three others...will hiro help peter again?

petersbrother, you are unclear about future Peter. Future Peter has his abilities, he was only hurt because the Hatian was there. How else would future Peter have taken present Peter to that location to show him how things are in the future?
