I keep hoping Peter will get a little faster at catching up with the big picture, but as of the end of chapter 2 I see that he still needs Nathan to help him. If Nathan dies what will he do?

Another vote for Petrelli...
Adrian Pasdar's portrayal of Nathan has been compelling and I feel that the show would be considerably less interesting without him around. I wish that we had spent more time with his character this season.
Anyhow, right off the top of my head I can think of a handful of ways to keep him on the show:
1. Peter uses his/Claire's magic blood to revive Nathan, but the affair is kept a secret. Nathan ships off to Japan where he links up with Hiro and Ando where they begin to investigate the Company's past so they (and the viewers) can start to get a grip on what the Company's aims really are. Their investigations also turn up some startling facts about Ma and Pa Petrelli.
2. Undeterred by the assassin's actions, Peter immediately turns to the cameras and says, "My name is Peter Petrelli. My brother, Nathan, realized that it was time for the world to know the truth. The truth is that there are people out there, people that are waking up to the fact that they can do incredible, impossible things. We don't understand it, and I can't really explain it, but I can show you." He then Sylar's off one of his fingers to everyone's horror and plugs the bleeding stump into one of Nathan's bullet holes. A shocked world watches as Natahn is revived. It turns out to be a good thing that the heroes get the word out first, as Sylar and his team of baddies take their campaign of destruction public. Pandora's box indeed.
3. My Favorite. The shadowy assassin was.....wait for it....Nathan! Nathan comes back from the future via Hiro or Peter where the terrible fallout from his announcement has convinced him that he must stop himself from giving his fateful speech at all costs. Grim future Nathan steps in to replace naive Nathan on the show. Future Nathan has a hidden agenda though, related to some of the terrible things that he learned in the future, and he pursues a mysterious course of action that makes for strange alliances.....
I do agree that the magic healing blood has created some problems for the show. Still, if you want to off someone, you can always go for the decap. Gruesome, but Sylar has popped enough tops that it would not be out of character for him to "permanently" eliminate his enemies.
Anyhow, just my $0.02.
PS - yeah, I know that Future Nathan killing off his past self appears to create a paradox, but all his actions do is eliminate his own future timeline - just like Future Hiro's timeline was eradicated. Hey - the show plays loose with the paradoxes - get over it.

I like the idea of future Nathan killing himself in the urr.. present. But I dont think thatll be it. Also Peter wont come up and talk cos hes driven by emotion and will stay by his brothers side. I think the shooter is either HRG (to protect Clairs life) or Nathans Dad (hes gotta come into at some point surely? Why not, seeing as hes a criminal, to save his own skin by killing of the person thats gonna reveal all about the powers which may get him some 'unwanted' attention)

West flies like a fairy compared to Nathan. He can fly much faster than west. Is it because he's older or more familiar with his power?

While I think it would be wild if Future Nathan shot present Nathan to silence him. I still think it was either HRG or another company person. But there is loads of possibilites.
I just want Nathan back - the character growth has been amazing.
I think Nathan just has a better grasp of what he can do. I get the feeling its just natural to him and that he doesn't think about it, he just flies.

I vote Nathan Petrelli! He is one of the most complex and interesting characters on the show - heroes would not be the same without him. Also, I love Adrian Pasdar's subtle acting style when portraying Nathan what a great actor!
- oh and btw i want to throw in a vote to NOT make HRG the assasin. Him an Nathan are my favorite characters and i dont want HRG to stoop that low...unless he has some kind of plan to revive him, he almost always has a plan

Nathan is Peter's conscience, his source of strengh and purpose. He is also a morally gray character which story is very interesting to watch unfold. Perhaps he could discover sometging new about his power like superfast speed due to his ability to fly (fast). Also his relationship with peter is vital to show, which depends highly on characters interaction and development instead of special effects. Moreover, i want to know how his relationship with claire develops throughout the SHOW.
He is the big brother, and there is always place for big brothers in any show. The show will not be as good with out nathan.
Peraps his dark side could be developed a bit (2 face burned nathan). Who knows
