I believe he just has to be near the person and he absorbs their powers, just like a sponge. We don't precisely know what his mother's power is, so we don;t know if he has used it or not.

Actually, I was told from a secret source, that Peter is not a sponge like I and everyone else persumed. In fact, all the abilities stem from Peter. He has them all, and whoever comes into contact with him or anyone who has been in contact with him, thats how the abilities spread.Its a giant chain reaction. Peter doesn't even have to know the person, but know someone who knows someone else, who knows someone else, etc. They are passed from person to person starting with him.Sounds crazy doesn't it. Thats why he's so valuable, and why his mom was trying so hard to hold him back from manifesting into the badass that he is.

Peter wouldnt have the Haitans power because the haitan nullifies powers
which nullifies peters powers so he cant absorb The haitans.

the idea that peter is the source of ALL the powers is a bit hard for me to process..i mean it could be possible..but i just dont see how he could've extended his powers to say the indian kid whu could manipulate dreams? it seems far-fetched to me..but hey! that's just one person's opinion..

I think theres still confusion on whether Peter has Eden's power and whether he has all of Sylar's powers, so to clear it all up yah he does lol. He met Eden in Mohinder's apartment in season one and we know that he got telekenesis from sylar, and telekenesis isnt sylars original power, so therefore he has all of sylar's powers yah!
