Yeah, I think you may be right... There are cultures that believe injesting an animals brain (in this case a human) allows you to absorb there powers.

Like eating a lions brain makes you powerful and eating a monkeys brain makes you eat banannas and scratch your anus and smell it.

According to an interview with Tim Kring the director, what Sylar does with the brains will be revealed early in season 2. Kring said that Sylar definitely doesn't eat the brains. I'm thinking... perhaps it's one particular part of the brain that Sylar needs... maybe he uses his Telekinesis to pry out that part of the brain, and when he touches it, the power is his??? I really want to know what he does, but I'm kinda dreading it too, cuz it'll probably be pretty disgusting.

Well, Sylar did have all those anatomy books in his place, learning about the brain, so maybe he just studies it and figures out how it works and then trains himself to do the same...I want to know, so I can try it on somebody. jk

NBC Heroes website points to "Activating Evolution" website that describes how Patient Zero gets his powers:

First of all, this is my first post :P

Secondly, I picture the section of the brain with the power as kind of a living code. When he kills the person through the specific area where the power is, he is forcing the 'code' to find a new body. Out in the open, the code (or maybe it's better to call it a soul of sorts) enters the closest body, which is his. He now has that code added to all of the rest he has stored in there.

    What do you think?

I agree that Sylar somehow 'soaks up the knowledge' or analyzes the code or data lying within the poor, now homeless brain matter but I have a hard time coming to grips that he eats it.....ritualistically or not. Well, he may eat it as a tasty treat after studying. There's supposedly a lot of protein in, oh....wait, that was afterbirth I'm thinking of, sorry.

I just want them to eventually reveal this dark secret.

After 'kindred' I was beginning to wonder if the gaping wound in Sylars chest courtesy of Hiro is forcing him to heal first before he can use his gifts.
