I don't think Sylar had any powers to begin with. Remember last season when he had a meeting with Mohinder's dad, Chandra Suresh? Sylar THOUGHT he was special, but Chandra insisted that he did not have powers. That's why he started killing people and acquiring their powers. I think he's just really smart and he figured out the genetics thing and that there is a part of the brain that causes the powers.
Sylar's Powers Origin

I have to agree with you. I may be recalling this incorrectly, but wasn't Sylar powerless until he found a name on a scrap of paper while he was visiting Suresh Sr.? And after visiting that person, that's when he became telekinetic. It snowballed from there.Posted 10/24/2007 12:46:08 PM #

No, no, no. Sylar always had a power, he just didn't realize it until his meeting with the good doctor. His ability involves determining how things work--the mechanisms underlying operation. He was a watch maker for this reason--he could determine the problem in a watch almost immediately. I guess his ability extends to neural mechanisms as well (which is what he discovered when he killed Zane (or whatever his name was)).

As I understand it, Suresh Sr. came to Gabriel Gray one day and immediately Gabriel could tell that his watch was broken. He had to get it close enough to his ear to fully tell what the problem was (it was three seconds off). So, does this mean that all he has to do is get close enough to someone's brain in order to fix the problem? Let us not forget that after Gabriel became Sylar, he said that the others didn't have a right to their abilities; that he thought he should be the one to have them all (sounds like highlander). And the eating the brains part...it actually might be the answer. While Mohinder had Sylar weakened, Sylar said something about "wanting to sink his teeth into it," or something along those lines.

hmmm...i really think that they are going to stray away from the whole I eat brains theory!
I agree with bob and anu mostly because:
1. I think sylar absorbs the ability by KILLING them...Instead of just being around them like Peter, he has to literally take thier power from them!
2. I think there's something to the whole "I know how things work" that can kind of go along with his ability to TAKE powers from people! His power is much like extracting the soul...he knows how the brain works and his genetics know how to extract the soul/power part of the brain...so once he kills the source..his body adapts the genes of the power...
so he's kind of like Peter, but the evil side...like the heads and tails of a coin...
does that make any sense? who's with me?

Yeah, I totally agree. Cadalyst and I were discussing that a while back.
Sylar is the more analytical side while Peter is more based off of feel.
Just the polar opposite...

According the the IMDB FAQ, Bryan Fuller (producer and writer) confirmed that Sylar does indeed eat brains in order to digest the DNA that gives the supers their powers, but they didn't want to make it blatantly obvious in order to avoid zombie jokes. It also mentions a moment at the end of season one where Molly tells Mohinder that the Boogyman (aka Sylar) "looks into your soul and then eats your brains", which kind of backs up the whole brain-eating theory. Ick.

These are the most impressive theories ive herd for a while i mainly agree with Jim coz that makes hella loads of sense. Its unfortunate he doesnt eat their brains coz thtd be really funny to watch but what happens to the rest of the brain wen hes done? There never seems to be anything left

HE JUST EATS THEM! IDIOTS!

The whole 'eat their brains' idea seems kind of cheesy to me, which is probably why they avoid being explicit about it (incidentally, his mouth always seems clean - what does he do, brush his teeth after every brain meal?). Plus, the concept of genetics and mutations and how they work makes the idea of somehow absorbing DNA through your bowel hard to digest (no pun intended).
